Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange Officially 0pened

The opening ceremony of Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange Ltd was held in Shanghai on December 23rd 2011. Vice Chairman (Minister) of NDRC Xie Zhenhua, Chairperson of strategic development committee of CDM Fund He Bangjing, and vice mayor of Shanghai Yangxiong participated in and addressed the ceremony. Also present was director general of CDM Fund Management Center Chen Huan.
Under the background of the rapid development of international carbon market, and with the approval from NDRC and Shanghai municipal government, Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange was founded on August 5th 2008, becoming the first environment exchange in China.
During the process of reform, Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange was transformed to a limited liability company, drawing into 10 state enterprises and institutions including State Grid, Baosteel Group, Huaneng Group, Shenergy Group. This transformation not only enhanced its domestic leadership and international competitiveness of the exchange, but also laid the foundation for the establishment of a national environment exchange. The exchange marked a new milestone of the development of domestic exchanges.
Chairperson He Bangjing pointed out that CDM Fund should play a pioneering role in the carbon market development. Through implementing new practices, CDM Fund could accumulate valuable experiences. By purchasing the shares of the exchange, CDM Fund expected to speed up carbon market development and better service national economic restructuring. Moreover, the Fund also hoped that the exchange could promote the development of new services such as verification, consultancy, exhibition, finance, etc. Hopefully the low carbon industry could become a new growing point for Shanghai.
